Great value, lots of space and a fabulous welcome for us. Very accommodating for our dogs and the large garden that is enclosed meant the dogs could roam and find the right pee spot.

And thank goodness for that, because what you get is something far more valuable and infinitely more British: a genuine, heartfelt, and utterly charming experience that feels less like a hotel stay and more like a visit to a favourite aunt's exceedingly well-kept home. From the moment we pulled up, the place had a certain undeniable kerb appeal. The garden, a riot of meticulously tended blooms, was a sign of things to come – a quiet promise of care and attention to detail. We were greeted at the door by Callum himself, a man whose warmth could thaw a glacier. His welcome wasn't just polite; it was genuinely enthusiastic, and within minutes, we were settled in our room, a cup of proper, strong tea in hand, feeling utterly at ease. And the room! "The Willow Room," if I recall correctly. It was a masterclass in understated elegance. No fussy, over-the-top fripperies here. Just a beautifully comfortable bed with crisp, immaculately ironed sheets that smelled of fresh air and sunshine. The décor was tasteful and calming, a gentle palette of soft blues and creams that felt instantly restful. The en-suite bathroom was spotless, a pristine little haven with a shower that, and I can't stress this enough, actually worked with decent pressure – a rare and beautiful thing in many guesthouses. But it's the little touches that truly elevate Lucy Cross from 'very good' to 'exceeding good'. The home-baked biscuits on the tea tray each afternoon, for instance. A simple gesture, but one that spoke volumes. The thoughtfully curated selection of local guidebooks and walking maps. The quiet hum of contentment that seemed to emanate from the other guests, all of whom, it seemed, had been similarly charmed. And then, there's breakfast. Oh, the breakfast. A full English that was, quite frankly, a work of art. The sausage, the bacon, the black pudding – all sourced locally, all cooked to perfection. The eggs, with their impossibly orange yolks, were a testament to their free-range provenance. And for those with a less carnivorous persuasion, there was a vast array of fruits, yoghurts, and cereals, all presented with the same meticulous care. It's the kind of breakfast that sets you up for the day, not just physically, but spiritually. What truly makes Lucy Cross Guesthouse stand out, however, is Callum himself. He is the heart and soul of the operation. His recommendations for local pubs and walks were spot on every time. His anecdotes were delightful. He had a way of making you feel like a cherished friend, not just a paying customer. He strikes that perfect balance of being present and helpful without ever being intrusive. In a world full of soulless chain hotels and bland, cookie-cutter accommodation, Lucy Cross Guesthouse is a breath of fresh air. It's a testament to the fact that genuine hospitality, attention to detail, and a warm welcome can be the most luxurious things of all. If you're looking for a place to stay that feels like a home away from home, where you're treated with kindness and generosity, and where you'll eat a breakfast you'll dream about for months, then do yourself a favour and book a room at Lucy Cross. Callum is an amazing host. His home is beautiful, full of of charm and history. So cosy, warm and has a relaxing feel about the house. Every effort is made to make your stay perfect. Nothing is too much effort. You have full use of a well stocked and large kitchen. There are snacks and breakfast items in a fridge available to use. We will definitely be visiting again.
